WATCH: Sumit Kumar bowls a sharp in-swinger to send Suryakumar Yadav’s middle-stump for a walk in Ranji Trophy quarter-final

Mumbai are battling Haryana in a high-pressure Ranji Trophy 2024-25 quarter-final at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. After winning the toss, Mumbai skipper Ajinkya Rahane opted to bat first, but the decision backfired as their top-order batters failed to withstand Haryana’s disciplined bowling attack. Early wickets put Mumbai in deep trouble before the middle order attempted to steady the innings.

Sumit Kumar cleans up Suryakumar Yadav with a jaffa

One of the standout moments of the match came in the eighth over when Haryana pacer Sumit Kumar delivered a magnificent in-swinger to dismiss Mumbai’s star batter, Suryakumar Yadav. Walking in at number five, the Indian T20I captain managed just nine runs off five balls before his middle stump was uprooted.

Kumar, who had already removed Akash Anand earlier in the innings, bowled a delivery that moved sharply back into Suryakumar, leaving him late on his shot. The ball sneaked through the bat-pad gap, crashing into the stumps and sending them cartwheeling. His wicket left Mumbai struggling at 25/4.

Suryakumar’s poor form continues

Despite being regarded as one of the top T20I batters, Suryakumar has been enduring a rough patch. His recent performances in the five-match T20I series against England were underwhelming, managing just 28 runs at an average of 9.60, including two ducks. Although India clinched the series 4-1 under his leadership, his individual form has raised concerns.

His struggles continued in the Ranji Trophy, adding to Mumbai’s early collapse. Earlier, Anshul Kamboj had struck on the very first ball to dismiss Ayush Mhatre before also removing Siddhesh Lad. Shivam Dube fell for 28 to Ajit Chahal, while Kamboj later got rid of Rahane, who scored 31 off 58 deliveries.

At one point, Mumbai were reduced to 94/6. However, the trio of Tanush Kotian, Shardul Thakur, and Shams Mulani have helped their team recover slightly, pushing the total to 202/7 after 52 overs.
