Arsenal vs Newcastle
Leg 1: Newcastle Double Chance
Arsenal may have home advantage for the first leg of this EFL Cup semi-final, but the simple fact is that Newcastle are the more in-form side right now, and this competition is much more important to their club than it is to the Gunners.
Eddie Howe’s side have already beaten Arsenal once this season, and arrive having won 6-in-a-row, including convincing victories over Aston Villa, Man United, and Tottenham, and clean sheets in 5 of those 6.
Arsenal, meanwhile, have seen their form swing wildly from one game to the next, and with several starters likely to be rested here, we see little reason why they would pull out the kind of performance needed to beat a Newcastle side that rank amongst the most in-form in the Premier League.
With Arsenal drawing 0-0 with Everton and 1-1 with both Fulham and Brighton in recent weeks, along with scraping wins against Ipswich and Crystal Palace by just a single goal, being able to back Newcastle to hold them to at least a draw at odds against looks like a great play here.
Leg 2: Alexander Isak To Have 1+ Shots On Target
Newcastle’s main man Alexander Isak is a surprisingly long price to hit the target at least once here. The focal point of an attacking unit that has averaged 3.0 goals per game across their last 6 league games, the Sweden international is averaging 1.53 shots on target per 90 from 3.37 shots per 90 in the Premier League this season.
He has had a shot on target in 7 straight Premier League games, with multiple shots on target in 4 of those 7. Looking back even further, Isak has had a shot on target in 11 of his last 12 league games in which he played at least 30 minutes.
He is also in fine goalscoring form, which should provide all the confidence needed to hit the target at least once. Isak has scored 9 goals in his last 7 league games, and will be Newcastle’s main goal threat here. A price of 1.57 looks like excellent value for him to test the Arsenal goalkeeper at least once.
Leg 3: Anthony Gordon To Be Fouled 2+ Times
Newcastle are a combative side who both commit and draw plenty of fouls, so for the final two legs of this bet builder we will be delving into the foul markets.
Our first pick is for Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon to be fouled at least twice. Only Bruno Guimaraes, the Premier League’s most-fouled player, has won more fouls per 90 than Gordon’s 2.50.
The pacy left-winger is a nightmare to defend, and his quick feet and speed on the counter have seen him fouled in 9 of his last 10 games for Newcastle in all competitions. In just the Premier League, Gordon has been fouled in all 18 starts this season, winning multiple fouls in 11 of those 18 starts.
He will be up against Arsenal full-back Jurrien Timber, and their right-sided centre-back William Saliba, who commit an average of 1.10 and 0.87 fouls per 90 respectively. Timber has fouled multiple times in 2 of his last 6 games, whilst Saliba has fouled at least once in 5 of his last 6 Arsenal games in all competitions.
Leg 4: Martin Odegaard To Be Fouled 1+ Times
Our final selection is Martin Odegaard to win at least one foul. The Norway international is finally back in the Arsenal fold after a lengthy spell on the sidelines, and offers excellent value in this market.
Of players expected to start in this clash, Odegaard’s 1.15 fouls drawn per 90 in the Premier League is the fourth-highest rate amongst Arsenal players, but his consistency in this market is what really makes this bet an attractive prospect.
Odegaard has drawn at least one foul in 12 of his 13 league games for the Gunners this season, and goes up against two Newcastle midfielders who are more than happy to snap into a challenge here, in Joe Willock and Bruno Guimaraes.
Willock commits 1.80 fouls per 90 in the Premier League, whilst Guimaraes commits only marginally fewer, at 1.70. Willock has fouled in 7 of his last 8 Newcastle starts in all competitions, whilst Guimaraes has fouled in 14 of his last 16 league starts, fouling multiple times in 9 of these 14.
