Leg 1 : Both teams to score

This has long been a fixture that means goals, with nine of the last 12 North London derbies in the Premier League seeing both teams score, with the two games last season finishing 3-2 to Arsenal at this ground and in a 2-2 draw at the Emirates.

Both teams have scored in two of Spurs’ three games this season, with only the 4-0 win over Everton not seeing goals at both ends of the field. Despite the clean sheet against Everton, Spurs have allowed 1.0 xG in all three of their league games so far, so were perhaps fortunate not to concede at least once.

Arsenal saw both teams to score land in their last game against Brighton and have now allowed over 1.2 xG in both of their last two games.

Spurs have reason to believe they can put up similar numbers here, with an array of attacking talent going up against what will be a disjointed Arsenal midfield. Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice and Mikel Merino are all absent here, which should have a big impact on Arsenal’s ability to press the ball. That should allow Tottenham to sustain their pressure and create more chances as a result.

Leg 2 : Arsenal to commit 13+ fouls

Arsenal have averaged exactly 15.0 fouls per game this season, running way above this line. They committed 12 fouls against Brighton but this was impacted by the red card for Declan Rice, with the Gunners being much more cautious after his dismissal.

Mikel Arteta’s side fouled 12 and 18 times in the two derbies last season, whilst they fouled 16 times in the derby at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2022/23, so have now cleared this line in two of their last three North London derbies, falling just one short in the one in which they did not.

Tottenham, meanwhile, won 13.4 fouls per game in the Premier League last season, the most of any side by a distance, with Aston Villa sitting in second on 12.4.

So far this season the Lilywhites have drawn 14.0 fouls per game, racking up even better numbers than they did last season. Spurs went way over this line in each of their last two league games, winning 15 fouls against Everton and 16 last time out against Newcastle.

Leg 3 : Dominic Solanke to have 1+ shots on target

Solanke has made just one appearance for Spurs, taking three shots against Leicester, all three of which were on target. He averages 3.0 shots on target per game this season, and though that rate is obviously unsustainable, Solanke averaged 0.95 shots on target per game for Bournemouth last season, and 0.88 in the top flight in 2022/23.

That performance against Leicester made it five Premier League appearances in a row where the forward has hit a shot on target. Across his last 14 league starts for Bournemouth, Solanke had a shot on target in 11, a very impressive streak considering he was playing for a bottom-half side. Against a weakened Arsenal side here, he should get chances and his recent form suggests he will hit the target at least once.

Spurs have averaged 6.33 shots on target per game so far this season, and Solanke looks a very likely candidate to contribute another one here. He took three shots in his two games against Arsenal for Bournemouth last season, registering one shot on target from those.

Leg 4 : Micky van de Ven to be fouled 1+ times

Micky van de Ven has been fouled 1.0 times per game this season winning a foul against both Leicester and Everton. The Netherlands international was fouled 0.65 times per 90 in the Premier League last season and 0.82 times per 90 for Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga the season before. Last season, when facing Arsenal, van de Ven won a foul in both North London derbies which bodes well for this clash.

He will be up against Kai Havertz, who commits 2.33 fouls per 90 and Bukayo Saka, who commits 1.07 fouls per 90. Havertz in particular looks a threat to foul van de Ven, with only Thomas Partey’s 2.60 fouls per 90 being higher amongst likely starters for the Gunners.

Havertz has fouled seven times in the first three league games for Arsenal, at least once in each game, and four times against Aston Villa. Saka, meanwhile, has fouled in two of Arsenal’s league games this season, twice against Wolves and once against Brighton.
