South Africa vs Sri Lanka: Unprecedented Defeat at Kingsmead

The first Test in the South Africa vs Sri Lanka series saw South Africa gain quite an edge. They bowled Sri Lanka out for an incredibly low 42 runs. This score hit the record books, marking Sri Lanka’s lowest Test score and the smallest total ever at Kingsmead. South Africa’s top performer was Marco Jansen. He took 7 wickets for a simple 13 runs in just 41 balls. He tore apart the Sri Lankan batting lineup in less than 14 overs.

Sri Lanka’s innings took a nosedive, and fast. Poor batting choices opened them up to South Africa’s fast-paced attack. Then came Kagiso Rabada. He got the ball rolling with an edge from Dimuth Karunaratne, and Jansen joined in. He quickly removed Pathum Nissanka and Dinesh Chandimal.

By the eighth over, Sri Lanka was down to a score of 16 for 4. The top order batsmen just couldn’t handle the South African bowlers. Gerald Coetzee added more chaos, taking two important wickets. Kamindu Mendis fell victim to him with a thoughtless shot that bounced off to the first slip. Jansen ended the inning with a double wicket, bowling out Sri Lanka after only 78 minutes.

Leading up to this, South Africa had been bowled out for 191 runs. Temba Bavuma was leading their score with a total of 70. But now, that modest score is a pretty big deal. South Africa is left with a big lead of 149 runs as they prepare for the next innings in this gripping match against Sri Lanka.
