Jammu :- Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the newly established Jammu railway division through virtual mode on Monday, marking a significant milestone in the development of rail infrastructure in India’s northernmost region. The creation of this division fulfills a long-standing demand from the local population and comes at a crucial time, just before the anticipated launch of train services connecting Katra to Kashmir.
The inauguration ceremony in Jammu will see the presence of distinguished officials including Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, MP Jugal Kishore Sharma, and Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh.
The new division, headquartered in Jammu, will oversee a comprehensive network spanning 742.1 kilometers, incorporating several key sections including the Pathankot-Jammu-Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla route and other strategic rail connections. This expansion brings the total number of railway divisions in India to 70 across 17 zones. The new division will be responsible for managing some of India’s most impressive engineering achievements, including the Anji Khad Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed rail bridge, and the Chenab Rail Bridge, which stands as the world’s highest railway arch bridge at 359 meters above the riverbed – surpassing even the height of the Eiffel Tower.
The division will also oversee the critical Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) project, which is approaching completion. Final safety inspections and trials are scheduled for January 7 and 8, with the Railways expected to complete 255 km of the 272-kilometer USBRL project soon. The remaining stretch between Katra and Reasi is targeted for completion by December.
The establishment of this new division represents a significant step forward in modernizing rail infrastructure in the region, with plans to incorporate advanced technology and IT systems for efficient operations. Currently managed by the Firozpur Division of Northern Railways, the transition to the new Jammu division promises to enhance the management and coordination of train services in this strategically important region of India.
