His first win over the Midlands outfit came in the Carabao Cup which saw the Red Devils run out as 5-2 winners in the last-16.

And in his final match in the dugout at Old Trafford, United eased to a 3-0 victory against Leicester before the November international break.

The Foxes also considered West Brom’s Carlos Corberan and England under-21 coach Lee Carsley, but were reluctant to pay compensation.

Graham Potter was also a target, however he did not want the job.

Van Nistelrooy has been eager to get back into football having previously applied for the managerial position at Coventry.

Though talkSPORT understands that former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is in advanced talks to take over the Championship outfit.

Leicester will be ex-Real Madrid striker Van Nistelrooy’s second permanent manager’s job having previously worked at PSV.

He spent a year with the Dutch giants from May 2022 to May 2023, where he won the KNVB Cup and Johan Cruyff Shield.

Van Nistelrooy returned to Old Trafford in the summer to become one of Erik ten Hag’s assistant managers.

Following his Dutch compatriot’s sacking, Van Nistelrooy took charge of United on an interim basis.

Having gone unbeaten in his four matches in charge, fans were desperate for the club to keep him on.

However his exit was confirmed earlier this month following Ruben Amorim’s arrival at the Theatre of Dreams.
