Leg 1: Over 4.5 Ipswich Corners
We’re kicking off this bet builder by backing the home side to put some pressure on Man United through corners. Ipswich have been good for corner kicks in their first season back in the top-flight in decades, racking up five or more in five of their last seven league fixtures.
The Tractor Boys have had 8, 10, 5, and 4 corners in their last four league games at Portman Road. The 10 corner game came against Aston Villa, demonstrating their ability to rack them up even against the better sides in the division.
United, meanwhile, have allowed plenty of corners this season, and their first games adapting to an entirely new defensive structure could well cause some confusion which Ipswich can exploit here.
Four of their last five away league games have seen their opponents have over 4.5 corners. Ruben Amorim’s new side have also now conceded at least five corners in four of their last five games, including allowing Leicester to win five corners in their final game before the international break. That tally came despite a 3-0 United win, suggesting that even if the Red Devils run away with this one, Ipswich can still hit this line.
Leg 2: Kobbie mainoo To Commit 1+ Fouls
Kobbie Mainoo looks set to be one of the midfield two deployed by Ruben Amorim when he sets up in his usual 3-4-2-1 formation here, likely to be partnering with Manuel Ugarte.
Mainoo offers the new manager extra mobility in midfield, and between them, the pair should offer some defensive solidity, with both being more than happy to snap into a challenge. With less protection around him, Mainoo’s already high tally of 1.59 fouls per 90 could well increase as the season goes on.
The young midfielder has fouled in five of his seven Premier League starts this season, including committing five fouls in his four league starts on the road. Mainoo fouled twice in United’s 3-0 away win over Southampton, his only other appearance against one of the newly promoted sides so far this season.
He will be up against Kalvin Phillips and Sam Morsy, with the former particularly likely to be fouled, as he averages 2.33 fouls won per 90, whilst Morsy averages 0.81. Phillips has won at least one foul in seven straight starts for Ipswich, including four occasions on which he was fouled twice or more.
Leg 3: Bruno Fernandes to be Fouled 1+ Times
Bruno Fernandes is likely to be deployed as one of the two wide forwards who sit behind the striker in Amorim’s system, placing him on the left flank, attempting to find gaps between Axel Tuanzebe, Sam Morsy, and Ben Johnson.
Fernandes in space is a dangerous sight for a defender, so the three of them will have to work hard to marshal the Man United skipper here. With Fernandes seeking pockets of space, if the press goes wrong, that should see Ipswich bodies coming across at speed to close him down, which can easily result in a foul.
Fernandes has won 11 fouls in his last five Premier League games and has won 1.26 fouls per 90 across the season so far, the fourth highest amongst first teamers in the United squad.
Fernandes’ matchups here, particularly Morsy and Johnson suggest that at least one foul on the Portuguese skipper is likely. Morsy has fouled 1.82 times per 90 this season, whilst Johnson is just behind him with 1.78. Tuanzebe may also get involved, committing 0.45 fouls per 90.
Leg 4: Kalvin Phillips To Be Fouled 2+ Times
Kalvin Phillips is expected to return to the side after his one-game suspension following his red card against Leicester at the beginning of this month. The ex-Man City man has not had the finest start to his career in Suffolk, but one thing he has been reliable for is fouls, both committing and drawing them.
Phillips has won at least one foul in all seven of his Premier League starts for Ipswich. He has also won multiple fouls in four of his last six starts for the club, being fouled four times against Aston Villa and three times against Brighton, by far the best sides he has faced in an Ipswich shirt.
Those numbers suggest that the higher quality the opposition, the more likely it is that Phillips will be fouled, which is why we are backing him to win two or more at what looks like a very generous price of 2.40.
Phillips will be up against Man United’s midfield two of Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte. As noted above, Mainoo has committed 1.59 fouls per 90, whilst Ugarte has committed an enormous 3.87. The Uruguayan has fouled twice or more in all three of his league starts for the club.
