When ESPN launched ESPN bet last year with the help of PENN Gaming, there were a lot of questions about how much the two entities would really be working together. After all, the layman’s view of the situation is that a news organization and a sportsbook that were run by the same company wouldn’t be overlapping each other very much. That assumption turned out to be very wrong.
Late last month, ESPN officials announced that they were integrating ESPN and ESPN bet in some really unique ways. ESPN bet players can now seamlessly toggle between the sites to check scores and place wagers. Players who link their ESPN and ESPN bet accounts can take advantage of features such as “Gamecast and Watch”, which allows them to watch and wager on certain games on the ESPN bet app. Though the system is still developing, Mike Morrison, vice president of ESPN bet and ESPN Fantasy has a lot of confidence that it will work.
“ESPN and ESPN bet will continue to offer players new ways to toggle between apps. The experience, so far, has been a lot of ‘test and learn’,” he said in bet-linking-espn/”>a recent interview with iGaming Business.
The process is worth engaging in because crossover players are pretty high value Morrison pointed out, “The assumptions you can draw are that the individual who links is betting more often,” Mike Morrison, vice president of ESPN bet and ESPN Fantasy, told iGB. “Perhaps some of the bets are of higher value and we’re able to identify different kinds of betting behaviour. This group of fans that are playing fantasy or betting are a high-value player… they’re going to be a very valuable customer for ESPN, so we want to find ways to engage them.”
ESPN bet’s relationship with ESPN bet will likely only expand over time. If there’s a limit to how close the two can become, executives like Morrison will certainly find it out.
