Hey, Essex fans here is some great news! Chris Silverwood is back as the director of cricket — a sweet reunion for this ex-England coach. He’ll step in mid-December, taking the baton from Anthony McGrath, who’s off to Yorkshire as their head coach. Moreover, Silverwood is not new to the Essex. He was key during a super-interesting time.
Under him, Essex climbed up from Division Two in 2016 and bagged the much sought-after County Championship Division One in 2017. What a win!
They broke a 25-year dry spell! Its no surprise Silverwood is thrilled to be back in Essex. The club’s dear to him — lots of fond memories, particularly winning in ‘16 and ’17. He’s geared up to continue Anthony McGrath’s good work. Developing local talent and creating a robust squad that can give tough competition in County Championship Division One and all— that’s the plan!
Chris Silverwood’s Strategic Focus on Strengthening the Squad
It’s a pivotal time for Essex’s cricket revamp, coinciding with Silverwood’s comeback. The summer brought changes – John Stephenson resigned as CEO, Dan Feist took over as general manager, and McGrath had the cricket director position briefly before jetting off to Yorkshire.
Jason Gallian, leading the cricket committee at Essex, is overjoyed at Silverwood’s selection. He regards him as the top pick after an in-depth selection process. “Chris is all set to guide Essex to more victories in County Championship Division One and further,” Gallian expressed with excitement. With a wealth of global experience – notably his stint as England’s head coach during the Covid-19 crisis and a two-year coaching stint in Sri Lanka, Silverwood is ready to bring precious expertise back to the club.
