win“>Leg 1: Man City to win

No Premier League side can hold a candle to Man City’s record in the first round of fixtures in recent years, having won in 10 of the last 11 seasons. Chelsea away is certainly a tougher test than some of the others they have faced on this run, but they do look well placed to make that 11 wins in 12 here.

The two sides faced off in pre-season on August 3, a game in which a City side featuring mainly youth-team players beat a near full-strength Chelsea 4-2. Mauricio Pochettino’s side posed problems for City last season, drawing twice with Pep Guardiola’s side, but there are signs that teething problems can be expected under new boss Enzo Maresca.

An under-strength City overcame United in the Community Shield last weekend, and though it is technically a friendly, it is certainly more competitive than any of the games in which Chelsea have featured so far.

City appear to be better prepared for this clash, and their superior quality on the pitch should allow them to translate that advantage into three points. At 1.85 to win here, we recommend adding this to your bet builder.

Leg 2: Chelsea GK to make 4+ saves

Enzo Maresca could not have asked for many tougher tests in his first competitive game at Stamford Bridge than a visit from his former employers, Man City. The club that has won four consecutive Premier League titles did however fail to beat Chelsea in the league last season, drawing 4-4 in London and 1-1 at the Etihad.

Despite this, Chelsea’s goalkeeper made six saves at home and four saves on the road, those games representing just two of the 23 last season in which Man City forced the opposing stopper into four or more saves. What’s more, Pep Guardiola’s side failed to have at least four shots on target just four times across the whole of last season.

Only Liverpool forced more saves per game (4.96) than City’s 4.71 in the Premier League in 2023/24, and though both sides have had a stop-start pre-season with many late arrivals, City’s comfortable win over Chelsea two weeks ago in Ohio perhaps suggested that the champions may be in a better position heading into this game.

City should have the better of the chances, and that could well mean a tough afternoon for Filip Jorgensen on what would be his Chelsea debut.

shot-on-target”>Leg 3: Jeremy Doku to have 1+ shot on target

Expected to start down Man City’s left flank here, Jeremy Doku faces the prospect of sharing left wing duties with Jack Grealish. Neither player has been noted for their end product when it comes to goals and assists during their time in Manchester, but Doku certainly showed flashes throughout his first season with the club.

The Belgium international finished the season strongly, despite Guardiola starting Doku in just four of the club’s last 11 competitive fixtures. The tricky winger still notched a shot on target in nine of these 11 fixtures, coming off the bench to either test the keeper or score at least once on six occasions.

Chelsea allowed 14.5 shots per game last season, 4.79 of which were on target, and are expected to start this game with a back four comprised entirely of players who were on the books in 2023/24. City then should have plenty of chances here, and with Doku having had a shot on target in all three of his appearances against Chelsea last season, he looks a solid bet to rack up another here.

LEG 4: Moises Caicedo to commit 2+ fouls

Only Conor Gallagher committed more Premier League fouls than Moises Caicedo in a Chelsea shirt last year. Gallagher fouled 83 times, the most of any player in the league, but Caicedo’s 50 fouls saw him averaging 1.57 fouls per 90.

The Ecuador international committed two or more fouls in over half of his appearances for Chelsea in the league last season and accumulated an impressive 11 yellow cards for his troubles. Caicedo appeared in all three clashes between these two sides in 2023/24, fouling three times in both the home and away league fixtures, and four times in their FA Cup semi-final.

Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva are expected to be his main matchups, so similar numbers are likely to be put up again in this clash on Sunday. De Bruyne won 0.96 fouls per 90 last season, winning a foul in his only start against Chelsea, whilst Bernardo Silva came in just behind the Belgian, winning 0.91.

At 1.67 to commit two fouls, which would be less fouls than he committed in any of his three games against Man City last season, Caicedo looks to be extremely good value here.
